The pandemic has challenged many people forced in to redundancy to re-think their career path. Even those who kept their jobs have used this unsettling time to evaluate how happy they are at work, and whether they want something more.

A quarter of UK workers are reportedly considering a career change in 2021, according to a report from job site Adzuna.

That’s a lot of pivots, and probably a reason why some sectors are struggling with labour shortages.

For those wanting to shift gears in their career, where do they begin?

Start with the reason why you want to move away from what you are currently doing. Are you unfulfilled? Have you got bored or too stressed?

The reason why you want to pivot can help keep you headed in the right direction, rather than repeating the problem elsewhere.

Try making a list of what’s important to you in a job. Whether it’s being valued, being paid well, or doing something fulfilling, it will help keep your career search focused.

What will it take to get where you want to go – investment, qualifications, licenses, a relocation? Can you cover what’s needed? No pivot will happen overnight, or go smoothly – expect bumps in the road, hurdles to overcome, and lots of hard work to make that change.

Trial and Error

The grass isn’t always greener! The reality of a new career isn’t always what we expect it to be. Plus, it isn’t always financially possible to quit your job and start all over.

Get some insight in to a potential new job by trying something on the side of your current role or volunteering in your spare time. If you’ve dreamed of running your own bakery, pub, or gardening business, take a weekend or evening job at a local business and get a feel for it.

It might exceed all your expectations, or it might help you realise how great your current role is. Before you take that big leap, dip your toe in and see how it feels!

Our DMR workers love the flexibility that temping offers.

You get to try different workplaces, different roles and work with different people. Often our temp roles lead to offers of permanent positions, and you have the freedom to choose whether to stay or opt for another new challenge.

Changing careers is a daunting yet exciting prospect. We hope whatever you choose, you find the best outcome for you.
