Apprentice Sophie talks tea, charity events, & recruitment!
Earlier in the year, commercial and industrial recruitment specialists DM Recruitment welcomed five new apprentices to its regional offices in Shropshire, Staffordshire, the West Midlands, and Powys.
The apprentices have settled in well and are doing an amazing job, so this week we thought we’d sit down and catch up with Sophie, an apprentice based in our Shrewsbury office, to see how she's been getting on.
Sophie has now been with the Shrewsbury office for eight months. In this interview, she talks tea, career ambitions, and the fast-paced world of recruitment!
Take it away Sophie...!
What was your first day like?
My first day was very new to me! It was the first time I had worked in an office environment but I loved it straight away. Everyone was very friendly and accommodating, and I enjoyed learning all the new skills I needed.
How many people are in the DM Recruitment Shrewsbury office?
I work in our head office in Shrewsbury. There is myself, the Managing Director, and the Compliance Manager working here. We all get on really well and enjoy working with each other.
Who’s the best tea maker in the office?
Stuart Danks [DMR's Managing Director].
What’s the office like?
The office environment is very fast-paced but relaxed at the same time. There is always help there from the team if you need it. We are all like a big family at DM Recruitment, so we find it easy to go to each other for support and help if needed. We all have our targets and goals and at DM we endeavour to achieve them!
What is a typical day like for you?
My typical day at the minute can include anything from customer service phone calls, to organising events for charity, helping with press releases, speaking to clients and candidates to see if there is anything we can improve on, communicating with Shrewsbury Town Football club of which we are proud sponsors, helping to create an online and social media presence, and anything in between!
What are your main tasks?
My main tasks are focusing on customer relations and client feedback, as well as creating an online presence and helping with the organisation of events here at DM Recruitment.
What skills have you learned so far?
I have learnt so many new skills at DM Recruitment since I have started, including; customer service skills, I.C.T skills, admin skills, maths, compliance, interview skills, and organisational skills. DM Recruitment has five key values we like to stick to, they are; Diligence, Passion, Endeavour, Trust and Loyalty. I like to think these shine through in my work.
What’s been the best part about your job?
The best part of my role so far has been talking with our clients to gain much-valued feedback on the services we provide.
What’s the most challenging part of your role?
The most challenging part of my role is prioritising my tasks and making sure all targets are met by certain time periods.
Is there anything you've learnt in your role that you weren't expecting?
I have learnt whilst working here that some things don’t always go to plan or how you want them to. You have to take accountability, get back up, and don’t give up!
Do you know what you’d like to do in the future?
I would like to carry on working for DM Recruitment but hopefully with a nationally recognised qualification in digital marketing.
How do you think this apprenticeship will help you in your career?
This apprenticeship will teach me about everything that goes on in the digital marketing world. I will have a qualification that I can take with me wherever I go, but more importantly the skills and qualifications to help me to progress within DM Recruitment.
What events or activities are happening at DM Recruitment over the next few months?
I am currently planning a litter-pick for a local charity which focuses on mental health. I am also helping to plan our in-house Christmas events and team building exercises.
Anything else you’d like to add?
DM Recruitment is an ever-growing company with a huge amount of opportunity if you want to succeed. You definitely get out what you put in, and for anyone who wants to learn and grow it’s a great place to work.
